This weekend I did a lot, and then I didn’t do a lot. It was pretty great.

Friday afternoon, I had a study session with my new flight instructor. It was a good time.

Friday night and Saturday morning I spent my time playing pool in the Portland Tri-Cups. We didn’t end up winning, but I got an awesome patch for getting an 8-ball break. In fact, because of that 8-ball break, I beat a much higher ranked player, two matches to his one.

The rest of Saturday I didn’t do a ton other than try to figure out what I wanted to do that evening and playing some video games. I ended up finally finishing the Tales of Monkey Island. This is a five-part game which continues one of my favorite video game series.

That evening I ended up going on a walking tour around part of Portland themed around Ghosts. It was a private event for Couch Surfers. There were around fifteen of us, of that I knew around four or five. Afterwards we went to the Green Dragon in SE Portland. Nice bar with a ton of beers.

Sunday was very relaxing. I finally caught up on some sleep. Beat another game I’d been meaning to play through, Braid. This game is a really awesome time-based side scrolling game. I’ve seen a number of components used in other games, but never done so well. It was a great game, though the story gets confusing in parts.

The rest of the day was spent watching the first episode of the prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. The first season was awesome and made me really want more. Sadly though, I found out the lead actor who played Spartacus, Andy Whitfield, ended up being diagnosed with cancer. This really made me bummed because he is an awesome actor that I wanted to see a lot more of. Well instead of cancelling the show, they decided to come out with a prequel (I’m hoping until Andy gets fixed for the sequel to Blood and Sand). So far, I’m excited for the direction of the show!

The evening was coming close to an end as I decided to finally watch one of the movies I have queued up. What was the movie of the evening, you ask!? None other than… “Machete”.

I enjoyed this movie. The story wasn’t the most interesting, but the portrayal of the characters was hilarious and all for fun. It also has one of my favorites, Jessica Alba, who looked so damn good. If you get a chance and want to watch an action movie with a bit of humor, then check this one out.

That brings a close to my weekend. Nothing too crazy, but overall it was great.

How about yourself? Do anything awesome over the weekend? Tell me in the comment!

Yesterday, I finished reading one of Chris Guillebeau’s manifestos, A Brief Guide to World Domination. Let me first start out by telling you that you can read this for yourself, free!

Second, this guide is geared for those who want to do more than they currently are doing, to become someone more than they are, and help others in the process. If that is you, then get reading (less than 30 pages).

It is a great read, and definitely gets you thinking. So go out there, and get your hands on the guide today.

If you haven’t tried out Boxee for your media pc software, then I recommend you get going and try it out. Boxee is fantastic with very easy to use software. I installed this great piece of work onto my main pc and my home theater pc and it just rocks. It is able to grab your tv shows and movie files on your computer (or another computer on your network) and actually find out what show it ties to, what episode it is, what season it is for, and also if available online, an image about the show, and a description with a possible rating. It does this for TV shows and also pulls the box art for movies as well.

Don’t have any shows on your computer…that is just fine, it’ll also list shows online and tell you which link it recommends (whether Hulu, ABC, NBC, etc.). If you have an episode on your machine however, it’ll recommend that first, then show other locations for the episode available online. It is also great to watch YouTube videos and others.

I really recommend this software for Windows, Unix, Macs, etc.

It’s quite a funny term to use – however it really is a screen of death. Thankfully I was able to save myself. Here is what I did.

Went to Google and told it what I was seeing. Thankfully I’m not the only one who has seen this screen. A number of bloggers who use WordPress (and Drupal) have seen this occur. However for whatever reason, nobody has added default error logging when this occurs. All you get is a blank white screen. Check the page source and guess what – blank.

Well I dug into the sites looking for clues as to what had happened. with no success. So I decided to go on my own to try and fix things.

Using FileZilla, a free FTP tool, I renamed my Plugins and Themes directories under wp-content. I backed up my wp-config.php file which resides in the root directory of the blog.

Downloaded the latest WordPress, in this case it was 2.9.1.

Extracted the zip file to my desktop.

Connected FileZilla to my blog location.

Pointed the left screen (my computer) to my wordpress install directory and pointed the right screen (ftp location) to my root directory.

Pressed upload, told it to overwrite, and let it do what it does best.

After this, my site still showed a white screen. However I was able to get into blog/wp-admin and log in finally.

I changed the theme to the “WordPress Classic” theme and voila…it worked!

Now I wish I could tell you what had actually happened, but I can’t. I’ll remember something though through this all…ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR STUFF!!!

Some points to make – when I renamed my wp-content directories from Plugins and Themes and tried to access the page, this should have “disabled” the themes and plugins. However I’m not sure it did. Something was causing this to fail before even accessing these directories.

From what I could tell, some plugin probably changed a necessary file. I should have verified it worked with 2.9.1 before enabling it. Oh well – live and learn.

Hopefully you don’t get into the same boat I did…and if you did…best of luck…it sucks!

Jason
